Join us for an inspiring hands-on workshop with master ceramic artist José Mariscal, and discover the fascinating world of crystalline ceramics. Throughout the week, José will guide you through both the making of the forms and the complex process of creating crystalline glazes.

The first two days focus on creating forms specifically suited to crystalline glazing. José will demonstrate different shapes and techniques in the mornings, followed by hands-on practice and individual guidance in the afternoons.

You will explore textures, tension in the form, double-walled pieces and elegant shapes with narrow necks. You will also learn how different textures and finishes can enhance the final result. The pieces made during these days will be bisque-fired in preparation for glazing.

José will introduce you to the fascinating chemistry and technique behind crystalline glazes. You will learn about:

• glaze formulation, mixing and application

• frits and their role in crystalline glazes

• the theory of crystallization

• firing schedules and temperature control

• pedestal placement using alumina

• differences between electric, gas and reduction firing

• analysing crystal formation and results
